Webinar 3: Statistical Significance vs. Clinical Significance
Presenter: A/Prof Karen Lamb (MISCH) and Phoebe Fitzpatrick (MISCH)
About the topic: Researchers are often led to believe that quantitative research findings are important, and only important, if results have a p-value of <0.05. An overemphasis of p<0.05 as the critical threshold for research to be “significant” and thus worthy of publishing has led to poor research practices. This seminar delivered by biostatisticians from the Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health research (MISCH) Hub will cover statistical significance and clinical significance. We will discuss common misconceptions about p-values, provide advice on how p-values and confidence intervals can be interpreted and discuss the importance of being mindful of clinically important differences when planning health research, as well as interpreting research findings.
